geneva13: a zine of the local

Issue #11: Spring 2010

The Education Issue

Is it true that children learn best when kept in a school six hours a day, five days a week, 10 months a year for 12 straight years? This was our starting question as we investigated the whole idea of education and learning. We don’t have any easy answers, but we asked a lot of questions. And we include a lot of voices too: elementary student, high school student, laid-off teacher, school principal, and a Mennonite mother. Plus we got Werts talking about books, Marks talking about the history of women’s education in Geneva, three Geneva haikus, two Tales of Glee, and much more -- including a standardized test, so get your number 2 pencils ready!

"The unconventional stories featured in Geneva13 make for entertaining reads, whether or not you've heard of the zine's small hometown of Geneva, NY. Art, comics, poetry, photography, and short stories liven up the local zine's debut issue, which boasts a clean layout and first-rate writing." - Utne Reader

Issue #12: Summer 2010

Foot Power

Featuring interviews with the owner and crew of the nationally-recognized Geneva Bicycle Center, as well as the founder of Geneva’s Musselman Triathlon, this issue focus on the theme of foot power. But not just in the sense of physical strength, but thinking about social change through such simple acts as walking or riding a bike. Combine that with fantastic discussions on local independent restaurants, genevalution.com, a pedestrian-centric town, a return to feet and hands, and the new Vere sandal company in Geneva, you’ve got yourself a packed issue championing independent/do-it-yourself culture over corporate culture. Plus, a great punkastronomy, a tales of glee, several poems, a music review, and thoughts on Geneva 13,000 years ago. It’s a packed issue for sure.

Issue #9 - Autumn 2009

The Garbage Issue

A must-have! We explore the complicated and disturbing history of garbage in Geneva, then turn a critical eye on the situation today: two mega-landfills less than 13 miles from Geneva, making this one of the biggest trash sites in the northeast -- with garbage being brought in from across the region. From front to back, this issue talks a lot of trash and packs a wallop.

Issue #8 - Summer 2009

Interviews with members of Geneva’s Syrian community, an essay on the Central Service Station (aka 305 Main Street), an investigation into Geneva’s Indian burial mound, plus some great art, poetry, and photographs. Only a few copies left:
